Your Guide to Brand Strategy: 3 Things You Need Before Designing a Brand

If branding design was based on aesthetics and aesthetics only, anyone could create a strong brand. As your brand designer, I’m here to tell you: that’s not the case. It’s not that easy. Because branding isn’t just a pretty set of logos and colors for your business – it’s a strategic performance tool. Your brand strategy is a huge part of how your design comes to be, and I’m here to show you exactly how to build a brand design based around that.

Brand Strategy: The Foundation for a Solid Brand

Jumping in headfirst with colors, fonts, and Pinterest is a surefire way to have your brand fail. Even if you want an aesthetic brand, starting with aesthetics first? Bad idea. There are a few key things you need to understand about yourself and your business before you ever start thinking about a vibe:

  • Who you are
  • What makes you different
  • Why you’re the answer to your customers’ problems

Whether you are doing a DIY brand or working with a brand designer, it’s best to have a foundational understanding of these principles before you start picking out colors, fonts, and logos. It’ll save you time, money, and energy… Trust me.

The answers to those questions should guide everything you do. That’s what makes the difference between a pretty brand and a pretty brand that converts. These are the things that will draw in your dream clients when you incorporate them into your brand design.

Designing Aesthetics Based On Your Brand Strategy

What people often get wrong is being pulled to a certain aesthetic, building a brand around it, and then realizing their market is either oversaturated with that kind of brand or losing interest in it shortly after. When your aesthetics are rooted in strategy, you get a brand that lasts and actually works for you. And alongside all of that, building a brand based on strategy will prevent you from having a design that doesn’t feel like you a year down the road.

So when you’re thinking about those questions, here are a few more things to consider:

  • Color psychology and how a color palette will make your customers feel (check out my blog post all about that here
  • The messaging that people are getting from your design elements (more on that here)
  • The experience that people are getting from the first time they click on your website to the last time they purchase something from you

And all of those things? They’re fully dependent on your brand strategy.

Don’t get me wrong, though. This never means that you can’t have a pretty, aesthetic brand. It just means that that’s not the most important part of your design, or that maybe what you had in mind isn’t going to be what’s going to bring people in the door. Which matters for a return on investment if you’re spending money on a designer!
